Having a website does not mean you are indexed in search engines. Does the question of how to get indexed on Google keep bothering you? Recently I was invited to give basics SEO Optimization training for a company on optimizing website and news content for search.  The intersection of website, search  and PR/communications are obviously something quite familiar and while I’ve  done several such presentations last year with our clients like Charity  Malaysia, Genting Permai Resort, Hotel Malaya, Nixfon and many more.

The way it goes with many training when you’re hired by a company to participate, is that the training topic are determined in advance. The trainer adapts themselves to that. Anyway, I’ve sorted the series of the questions out that I feel you as the reader need to understand and aware of it and will share several here along with my responses. I hope they are useful to your business growth.

Questions 1:

I never optimize my site and I have a limited budget, where do I start?

Answer:

This is everyone’s problem. Every client you met will say this kind of sentence because they don’t understand business need proper marketing to grow. And for that you need to invest certain amount of money to try something that most talked about in the market which is SEO Optimization.

Anyway, the answer to that question is Goal Setting and Understanding Your Audience.

I shared this before in my previous post here.

The first thing any marketing activity needs is to start with a goal setting, understanding your audience and the market. When search engine optimization is concerned, hiring a SEO Consultant or SEO Agency would be the ideal way because this is the lowest cost method of outsourcing for such activity.

Question 2:

Should I use a free blog or a blog placed under the site’s domain, or maintained separately under the free blog to allow for incoming links to your main site that are coming from a different site?

Answer:

Hosted Blog or Not?

There are two parts to the answer for this question. First, the reference to “free blog” sounds as though the blog is hosted with a third party service such as wordpress.com, blogger.com or typepad.com. Example:   yourblogname.wordpress.com, yourblogname.blogspot.com or yourblogname.typepad.com

My advice, please avoid using third party hosting services for your blog.  If you’re too invested in such a service or have other reasons for using them and cannot use something like WordPress installed on your own server where your website is hosted, then use domain aliasing options so that your blog URL is part of your company domain name. Example: yourblogname.com or yourblogname.companyname.com. You have full control and you can do anything you want without worrying the possibility of being ban or content spamming.

While links from your blog hosted on a wordpress.com or blogspot.com to your company website do count as inbound links, there’s not as much value from many links to your site from one other site vs. many links from other relevant websites link to your site.

This leads us to the second part answer to where the blog should be hosted. My preference is to host the blog either as a sub-domain or a sub-directory of the main company web address. Example: blogname.websifu.biz or in the case of Websifu, its www.i1websifu.com (totally different owned domain hosted).

The links that you attract from other relevant websites to your blog pages will build Page Rank back to the rest of your website. This is more true with the subdirectory than the sub domain. Also, keeping your blog address as part of your company website address is useful for branding and user experience.

Questions 3:

Should you post press releases/articles on your own website before distribution? How do search engines deal with the duplicate content issue in this case?

Answer:

Duplicate content is the biggest headache where most internet business owners face today. If you’re a publicly traded company and publishing financial announcements need to happen on the wires first or at least at the same time as publishing the press release on your own website. For other companies not limited by such requirements, posting a release to your own site first is fine.

Duplicate content is a common issue and it is the same situation when dealing with duplicate content when your press release/article is published on your own site as well as on the wire service. In fact, it’s normally a goal for companies that distribute their releases through a newswire service to get as many other sites to copy and republish the release as possible. If the release is properly optimized, each time another website with a unique domain name publishes a copy; it creates a link back to whatever webpage on your corporate site you’re trying to draw attention to. This sends more traffic and can affect the search ranking of the destination page.

Remember this, duplication with press releases/articles is quite common because of distribution on wire services and to manipulate search engines to rank a certain version of your press release but there are a few steps you can take. One piece of advice that you can follow is many SEO Expert will publish the release on own site so Google crawls it there first.

However, if there are more links to a different version of the same release hosted elsewhere, the other copy might be perceived as deserving to rank in search results instead.

Questions 4:

Answer:

The first thing you should do is deciding what to share on social media sites. You should take into consideration what types of content where the members of the social community are best responding to. Press Releases are often formal marketing communications, not exactly conversational. As you understand the community you’re trying to reach with the press release, you should know whether it’s appropriate to share a press release with them in a social media setting.

The biggest mistake many SEO consultants, marketers and PR professionals  make is to register with a variety of social network, news and bookmarking  sites and then self submit, vote and rate their own press releases without  having ever participated in the community.

Now, do you think by not participating in the network, people in the network paying attention to what you’re sharing? I bet only few will ever notice the press release or worst no one will bother.

If you do have a network on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, Myspace, Delicious, Digg and others, then you will know personally whether it would be acceptable to the community to share content in a press release format.

Outside of social media news release, your best gamble to take advantage of social media distribution of a press release would be to make it easy for the press release to be saved, shared and submitted by interested readers.  You can do this with widgets or plugins offered by Social Bookmarks, Add Any Buttons, ShareThis and similar services which can be placed in your WordPress blog. Many other wire services already support those features as well. Additionally, you should monitor pickups of the release on the social web.

Now, very important that many forget, if you see someone submit or share a  release you’ve sent out on a social media site, make sure to get in touch with and  thank them, answer any questions and show interest. That can generate interest from others in the community as well. One tip I recommend is to write a blog post version of the press release and share that content with social media communities. Make sure to include a link to the full press release within the blog post for people that want more information.

What you should not do is treat social media sites as a place to dump press release or article content thinking it will get a lot of exposure because there are many members of the community.

Answer:

Companies that say they have no news that worth to be published is more common than you might think. They have other issues to deal with and that’s the main reason they don’t have anything that new, innovative, creative or unique to talk about their products or services. Honestly, any good social media marketing program cannot fix a broken business and broken mentality. 

Hey, by now you should understand that the main purpose you run a business is to make money by fulfilling customer needs. A standpoint to consider would be to focus on the customer rather than the company. Use social community contribution as a way to listen and connect with customers to find opportunities to serve them better. Improve your customer care because good customer service will feed you forever.

Communication is the key to build your trust with clients. Any business needs personal touch. Develop relationships with influential and encourage feedback. Innovation can certainly come from a customer base as can the spread of a great idea. Focus on connecting with customers and helping customers connect with each other in a social community and there may be more potential customers than you ever expected.

Questions 6:

There are so many so called SEO Experts and SEO firms, how do you pick a good one?

Answer:

There are tons of SEO experts out there and most of them are good and know their things but then there are also tons of “typical” clients. Professionals that provide effective SEO consulting are reputable, experienced and in my experience, probably more talented than most traditional marketers you’ve ever worked with.  People doing unethically things in the name of SEO are NOT professionals and the absence of that word, professionals, in the question is the problem.

Article spinning software to create or spin the articles in few versions?  Demand for shortcuts helps you create the junks articles will bring you nowhere. Automatically generating garbage articles for article directories or press release will help NO ONE. Bad quality articles will leads to bad company impression. You’re digging your own grave.

Here some tips…

• A good title tag will include the keyword you are trying to rank that page for.
• Don’t use long title tags. Most of the search engines will truncate your title tags after 65 characters including spaces.

2. Meta Description Tags

Every page should have their own description and search engine do count this too. If your title tags are the cover of your page then your meta description tags are the back cover telling your visitors what’s inside. You can view the description tag of any website by right click and view the source code.

Confused? Don’t worry. Take a look at the image below.

As I indicated in the image above, you should write a couple sentences that describe your site or your page. In your meta description, you get a bit more room to talk but you should use no more than 200 characters. Just like with your title tags, every page should have a unique meta description.

3. Naming The URL/File(s)

This is important as well. You should name your web page file that related to your page description. You should use proper keyword to describe the page. Now let’s take a look at the image below and the example and you tell me which one looks better and easy to understand?

a) www.yourwebsite.com/index.php?=7497

OR

b) www.i1websifu.com/web_marketing_price.html

Now, I believe you noticed that I use keyword there “web_marketing_price”.

You see… Your URLs and page names matter for the purposes of generating a click to your site as well as improved search rankings. Even a Google search engineer Matt Cutts also once said before that having short, descriptive URLs is a factor in better rankings.

4. Be Visible
