Is Female Clients Are More Difficult To Deal?
Regardless what field you are in, it is the same for website developer; no matter what you must know how to deal with complicated clients. Most people I met said that it is more difficult to deal with female rather than male client. How true is this? Hey, don’t get me wrong here, I’m not looking down into female or being prejudice here. What I try to do here is finding the reasons why they are more difficult to satisfy.
Now, there are few things we will look into here:
- What are the personalities that discriminate female from male clients?
- What is their main concern money? Quality?
- Which are harder to convince?
Annoying Personalities of Female Clients
1. Too picky?
The very first thing I noticed with female clients is they are too choosy. I wonder whether they are picky or confused which to choose. When I said choosy mean they are really fussy. They unable to make decision and keep asking designers to keep revise the designs and this makes them unable to decide which the best for their business is. Female clients are definitely not easy to satisfy.
2. Emotional
Women are emotional type and that is why they take longer time than men to make any decision. This is because I believe due to the nature of them born as a female they mix emotional factors with their rational decisions. Even though their head tells them it is right but their heart keeps telling that there are something missing. And I wonder what that is… Only God knows it!
3. Stick to Their Choice
Female client are very sophisticated when it comes to choosing the right color. No matter the age or the purpose they will still choose the colorful one rather than simple and color that suit their business nature and corporate look. Many female clients I met like pink probably because their wardrobe full of pink or it matches their complexion. And I believe that’s the main reason they insist on having a shocking pink design for their corporate identity. At any rate of you persuade or argue with them, they will glue their mind to the decision even if it doesn’t look professional enough.
4. Good is Me, Bad is You…
I read somewhere where this guy play heads, tails game with one of his relatives. He said something like “heads I win, tails you lose”. His relatives took a week to finally realize that he was never going to win that way. This is the same with female clients. If the work is good, then they did it but if it’s bad they will blame you, you did it. If they don’t reply, they are really busy. But if you’re late of something then you are irresponsible.
5. Bargain Machine
I always said this to my friends that female clients are “bargain machine”. You will get exhausted with them. I believe this is their nature. If you observe your sisters or girlfriends whenever they’re buying things they will always bargain even though the price actually extremely cheap. This is another case with men where they just go for it. Female client are tend to bargain a lot and this make them dragging time and delay in making decision. This is because they will fight for every penny. As a website designer myself, I always in dilemma, trying my best to convince them to understand the value of design and make them realize the costs involved in it. I always end up justifying every single thing. Headache!
6. Less Recognition
Another issue that I always face is appreciation to my work quality so that I can use it for my business purpose. Don’t expect any recognition even though you did a good job. They will just say ‘so what”. Hey, I’m not saying every female are like that but mostly are including my own girlfriend.
They will never acknowledge and female client can be really rigid when it comes to appreciating someone’s work. This can also be frustrating for designers who wish for some appreciation and praise for the efforts. As you can see real testimonies from clients psychologically will give additional credits and attract the website’s visitors to hire.
7. Questions Machine
Another headache dealing with female client is they are questions machine. They want to understand everything if possible even until the programming part which has nothing related to them. Naturally, female are like that. They love to ask questions but as a website developer it is a “hell” because most of the questions are not logic and meaningless.
8. I Am Right and You Are Wrong
They are always right and we are always wrong. It’s exactly like having a relationship. Whenever something happen its men’s fault not them. For them it is you who is wrong. They can never judge properly and logically because of emotion. No matter how incorrect they are or how illogical they might sound, they are always right. Can you just imagine how frustrating it is for a website developer to be blamed incorrect in their area of expertise by a laywoman?
9. All Rounder Decision Making
Probably this is their common trick or probably it is in their blood. I met a lot of them say something like “I think I’ll have to discuss with my husband for this”… Believe me, this is their common statements. Can you imagine how long this thing will drag? I met one client early March this year and we’ve finalized everything including the price but for them to prepare the payment or go-ahead decision from management is like ages. But I found it weird because she’s the only Director of the company. After few months she came back and set for few appointments which ended up postponed. What I did is to reject the project because there is no assurance in it. I can’t seem to find the client to commit and this can give me problem later if they can’t make any decision and the project will take years to complete. The complexity is that women like to involve family or friends in their choices. They will ask around then come back to us and say that “my friend says this, my friend says that” and this can be very troublesome and becomes really difficult for website designers who have to justify each and every foolish advice that the client is given by her relatives or friends.
As from my experience I believe that both female and male have own personalities that make us feel annoyed and hard to convince. As website designers or graphic designers, it is very crucial that they understand the attitude and behavior of their clients beforehand, so they can handle them accordingly.

Wow!!! So true. I am not sure what it is. The projects always become so complicated with female clients. I thought it was just me but having asked quite a few web developers there is a general consensus that female clients are particularly difficult to deal with.
I am not sure whether it is something to do with how they handle or understand web technology but some of the points you raised above perfectly sum up my experience.
I am freelance now but I have also worked at agencies. I always had the impression that some of the female clients we had needed to assert themselves as not to be dominated by all the men working on the projects, which I can fully appreciate.
But I found it often led to them trying hard to sound as if they knew what they were talking about in terms of web technology which of course led to much confusion and misunderstanding as terms were being thrown around incorrectly and led to work having to be redone and redone again. Very frustrating.
Hi John,
Thanks for the comment. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense at all the way they used the terms and they seem to be proud of it.
For me the hardest part is to wait them make decision over some small things. It could take ages sometimes. Anyway, not all of them are like that. Some are awesome and willing to take advice.
