Now, few weeks back I posted article about annoying personalities of female clients. Today, we will talk about men. How annoyed men can be! Fair enough?

As I mentioned in the previous article, no matter what department or business you’re in you must learn how to deal with troublesome clients. Now, do you think male clients are more complicated then female? Let’s find the reasons why they are more difficult to satisfy.

Now, there are few things we will look into here:

1. What are the personalities that discriminate male from female clients?
2. What is their main concern money? Quality?
3. Which are harder to convince?

Annoying Characteristics of Male Clients:

1. Like a Train

Always in a hurry and piece of cake! For men everything is “kacang putih” or a piece of cake for them. For male clients they want everything to be quick and prepared within their time-frame. Not sure whether they purposely or they don’t know that good and professional design require time. They need to let the designers to play first for the best. From my experiences this is where the male clients fail to understand.

2. Making Used

One clear thing about male clients is they like to get few designs from different sources and at the end they will give either to their own people (kids, brother, relatives) or someone who can give cheaper or free solution. They will take and make use all the good ideas. As a web developer I felt this is an insult and no manners. We did all the hard work and someone else reaps the benefits.

3. The “know-it-all” attitude

“I know everything” that’s men attitude and pride. And most of the time it won’t bring any benefits to the development. What male clients normally do is they pretend they know a lot about web development, graphic design, but actually they don’t. Just imagine how frustrating can it be from web developer point of view when clients try to “teach” them about graphic design.

4. Delaying Payment

They want EVERYTING FAST and completed within their time-frame but when they comes to payment DON’T HAVE COMMITEMENT. Avoiding! Excuses! Compare to female clients, male clients are THE best at delaying in payments. You will get a lot of excuses like “I’m outstation, I’ll pay you later.” I faced this problem for the past 2 months with 2 clients, delaying payment even though the site has been completed 100% and based on requirements. I’ve been chasing payment since then. The best thing is they are big players in the market who shouldn’t have any problem with payment. Just imagine if we have similar 10 cases in a year and for a small company like us, I guess we are doomed to shut down the business. Male clients are SELFISH!

5. Busiest Creatures on Earth

There is another problem that is persistently found in male clients. They seem to be too busy when called for revisions. They would prefer to discuss over the phone rather than coming to check the designs. This can be really hard for designers to understand on the phone.

6. Rude

Most male clients are rude. Come to think about it, there are more chances of involving verbal clash with male clients compare with female clients.

7. Do as I say

Most male client love using this tricks. Just do as they say. They will never reveal everything they want in the first place. Then we it come to development they will keep changing the requirements. They never have any consistency while making decision. They are bossy and love to show off. For them, once hired you’re a PAID DOG!
Just DO what I say.

8. You should know what I want

This is the most critical for web developers. Male clients always expecting the developer will know EVERYTHING. Their favorite sentence “you should know that because you’re a developer”. They always want the way they want it and all other that recommended is not good enough. They want something “unique” something “wow” something “different” something “never seen before”. But the funny thing is when asked what exactly they want…the answer is “I don’t know”.

9. Never Admit Mistakes

Male clients will never admit their mistakes. Screwed them! For them, everything should be developed within the same budget even though it’s NOT in the quotation. They will say “Its small things”… “Basic requirements”… “Piece of cake”… They pay for small budget simple website design, and then want an upgraded version of the template, ability to modify the content (CMS), and then ask for flash in their website and the list goes on. This is one thing designers should keep watch of when dealing with male clients. Be clear about your development details and your terms of services.
