Personal Experience: Redesigning a Website

Few hours ago I met a new lead from the web asking me about redesigning their current website. Here what they requested:

  1. They want to change their current header to a new flash header.
  2. They want to add and change their current menus to a drop down menus.
  3. They want to add more images.
  4. They want to modify their entire website contents.
  5. They want a contact form that support spam protection.
  6. They want to change the current website color to a new one.
  7. They want add few more products pages.

Now, I’m wondering is that a redesign or totally new website? :)

So, I started to explain to the client that what they want to do is not a redesigning their website but change the whole things and it’s a new website look and feel.

I begun to explain things or two until they get the whole idea what is redesigning a website actually.

This is what I told them:

1. Current Trends and Technology

Problem: Currently, your website looks like 90’s. It’s an old fashion.

Solution: The trends are changing and you have to flow with the current technology. To be on par with the competitors you have to change first and this can be done with the new website look and feel.

2. Website Contents

Problem: Currently, the website content is poor, it’s hard to read and not user-friendly.

Solution: By hiring a web copywriter to rewrite the website content will improve your website and your products presentation.

3. Website Features and Functionality

Problem: Hard to use and nothing that can impress the visitors.

Solution: By changing the look and feel it will eliminate all those weaknesses.

4. Web 2.0 Design Standards

Problem: The existing website will never impress the visitors and it’s already outdated.

Solution: Today’s design standards are higher than 10 years back. We are into Web 2.0 now. It’s more high quality design with simple flash, drop down menu names, 3D buttons and so on.

5. Mission and Objectives

Problem: Your existing design is not on par with the current trend and that makes the company’s mission and objectives are not clearly presented.

Solution: Your website should be more corporate and look into the future by outlining your business objectives and mission. Your website should reflect with your company’s goals in order to deliver the message.

6. Visibility

Problem: Your website cannot be found in any search engines. This is not good for business. By having a website doesn’t meant people will come to your site.

Solution: You need proper online marketing and proper search engine optimization. Get a SEO Expert to help you with web marketing.

Now, why do I need to do all these?

It’s simple actually.

What you trying to do is to create an opportunity to communicate with your existing clients and creating a new potential customers. But remember this; first impression is very important to make sure they remember about your site. When they visit your site try your best to capture them into your database so that you can keep reminding them by creating interactions in between your company name, your brand and potential customers, before they become your clients.

By having a new website, it give you an excuse to do a press release, contacting your clients and contacting your target audience to announce your new website look, inviting them to visit, let them know what you are doing, what’s new, and up-to-date information. I can go on but can you see what’s the new website can do for you? You’re actually creating an opportunity to tell everyone that your company is willing to invest in improving service and keeping up with the industry. It will also encourage them to visit your site again, reinforcing the name recognition of your company.

Now, ask yourself, do you prefer to do business with a company that is looking for future or rather than being stuck in the past with the poor impression? Don’t you think with all of these advantages, it’s time for you to get a new website for your company?

It’s for you to decide… it’s your business!

Cheers! :)
